I love making my own products but there are two that have me feeling a little bit hesitant/overwhelmed: deodorant and toothpaste. Since the hubby and I have a BIG change coming, I thought now was as good a time as any to transition to everything homemade.
For years I’ve been looking at that label on the side of toothpaste. You know the one I’m talking about: Warning! Keep out of Reach of Children. If swallowed contact poison control. YIKES! Really? I mean I’m putting this in my mouth EVERY DAY and you are telling me that if I swallow too much, it could make me sick? Ummm, NO THANK YOU!
Per usual, I read this warning and continued brushing my teeth. I knew that I would never ingest too much (whatever that means). Fast forward a few years… now there is a small person in the picture. A baby who puts EVERYTHING in his mouth. My views have changed. Hello, DIY toothpaste!
So, why the hesitation on making my own toothpaste? I have sensitive and groovy teeth (think Grand Canyon not Brady Bunch) and have always been worried about dental health and cavity prevention and I assumed that the only way to maintain healthy teeth and gums was with traditional toothpaste. I’m beginning to discover that my fears aren’t really based on any facts and that a DIY toothpaste can offer just as much as a commercial toothpaste without all the warnings, additives, and other junk.
I searched high and low for a toothpaste that I thought would help my teeth and gums become stronger and the one that I decided to try was Lindsay Lee Bentley’s homemade remineralizing toothpaste. I followed her basic instruction with a few changes to add in the benefits of my favorite Young Living Oils. This toothpaste is divine. It leaves my teeth feeling fresh and clean and over the last week I have noticed a decrease in sensitivity. Hooray!
DIY Toothpaste with Minerals
(adapted from Lindsay Lee Bentley’s homemade remineralizing toothpaste)
4 Tbsp baking soda
2 Tbsp Coconut Oil (unrefined, virgin)
1 tsp fine sea salt
2 Tbsp calcium/magnesium powder
3 Tbsp bentonite clay powder and 4 Tbsp purified water (premixed)
2 Tbsp Xylitol
1 Tbsp Stevia
20 drops thieves essential oil (to help reverse cavities and gum issues)
20 drops peppermint essential oil
15 drops clove essential oil (to combat toothache or sensitivity)
15 drops orange essential oil (for taste and an immune boost)
Mix them all together in a glass jar or this awesome silicone squeeze tube. If the consistency isn’t just right you can add a bit more purified water.
**Please only use high quality essential oils. Most oils found in stores contain pesticides, additives or fillers. Do your research! To find out what oils I recommend click here**
**Do not store in metal or plastic container as the bentonite clay will pull toxic stuff out of the container and into the paste**
If something in this recipe doesn’t work for you just rework it until you get something you L O V E!

- Xylitol has been said to have similar qualities to fluoride without the ill effects.
- Coconut oil (unrefined, virgin) has antimicrobial properties and can aid in the removal of bacteria.
- Calcium and magnesium may help remineralize teeth.
- Thieves oil has been said to reverse cavities and regenerate teeth.
- Clove oil can help with tooth sensitivity or aid in pain relief fro toothaches.
